You Are Not In Over Your Head. You Are Becoming.
Recently, a client asked me a question that stopped me cold.
“Would you tell me if I’m just not good enough to do this?
If I’m in over my head and need to get out and let someone else do it?”
“No. I’m never going to tell you you’re not good enough,” I said.
I did not have to think about the answer.
There will never come a day that I believe a person cannot learn, grow, change, evolve, and develop an entirely new level of expertise.
That does not mean I will lie or exaggerate.
It does not mean the process will be easy.
It does not mean the learning and growing will be rainbows and unicorns.
Life will always be fifty fifty.
Some easy streets.
Some rocky roads.
Fifty percent happy.
Fifty percent messy.
A little bit of sunshine.
A little bit of rain.
That is true for all of us.
When you are becoming, there will be growing pains.
You have to stop being who you were in order to become who you will be.
More experience requires more self awareness.
Improving your skills changes your identity.
Taking on new responsibilities reshapes how you move through the world.
That kind of evolution can be startling.
And yes, sometimes scary.
But I am certain of this.
Everything you have imagined yourself having, doing, and being is not somewhere else.
It is already here.
You must be brave.
You must pull from that hidden place where your determination and ferocity live.
You will get used to the stretch.
You will grow into the weight of it.
And one day you will realize this moment was not proof that you were in over your head.
It was proof that you were becoming.
