The Worksheet Is Not the Work
Real coaching is not found in worksheets.
Or frameworks.
Or tools.
Now before my teacher friends start sending me strongly worded messages…
I love a good framework.
I was a teacher.
Public education loves its frameworks.
Worksheets.
Scaffolds.
Graphic organizers.
Guides.
There is a huge expectation that we take messy human experiences and put them into tidy little boxes.
And while we're learning?
That's not a bad thing.
Frameworks teach skills.
Worksheets build awareness.
Tools give us something to practice.
But somewhere along the way, people start believing the worksheet is the work.
And it isn't.
I've noticed something after years of teaching, coaching, and watching human beings try to change.
Many of us believe that if we could just get the right answer, everything would be different.
If someone would just tell us exactly what to do.
If we could find the perfect book.
The perfect framework.
The perfect strategy.
Then we'd finally change.
But that's not what I've seen.
What I've seen is that most people already know more than they practice.
They know they should have the conversation.
They know they should set the boundary.
They know they should stop people-pleasing.
They know they should speak up.
They know they should pause before reacting.
Knowledge isn't usually the problem.
The moment is.
Because life keeps showing up.
Life keeps asking questions.
Life keeps handing us opportunities to practice.
And life doesn't care what you wrote in your journal last Tuesday.
Life cares what you do when your feelings get hurt on Thursday.
That's the test.
Not what you know.
Not what you highlighted in a book.
Not what your coach told you.
What do you do when the moment arrives?
Do you pause before you pop off?
Do you catch yourself before you become snappish?
Do you take one breath before doing the thing you've always done?
And then…
Can you allow yourself to SHIFT?
Just a little.
An inch.
Because lives don't usually change in giant sweeping moments.
They change in inches.
A different response.
A longer pause.
A conversation you would have avoided before.
A boundary you finally speak aloud.
A moment where you stay present instead of running.
Life keeps calling us into those moments.
Some people answer.
Most don't.
Some of us spend years buffering the call.
Eating.
Drinking.
Scrolling.
Shopping.
Gossiping.
Consuming.
Looking for something "out there" that will make us feel better "in here."
(Pounds chest.)
And I understand why.
Feeling can be uncomfortable.
Especially when nobody taught you how.
But what if the feeling isn't the problem?
What if the resistance to the feeling is?
What if the next time your throat tightens…
Or your chest constricts…
Or your stomach drops…
You simply notice?
"Oh."
"There it is."
"That's interesting."
"My throat feels tight."
"Let's stay here for a minute."
Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Stay.
Just stay.
And then something remarkable happens.
The wave moves.
The sensation shifts.
Your brain comes back online.
You regain access to your wisdom.
Your integrity.
Your knowledge.
Your ability to choose.
You didn't need another worksheet.
You needed a moment.
A moment to feel what was happening.
A moment to trust yourself.
A moment to choose differently.
That's the work.
Not becoming a different person.
But becoming someone who can stay present long enough to choose.
Again.
And again.
And again.
Because life keeps asking hard questions.
And the goal was never for your coach to stand beside you every moment of every day.
The goal was for you to learn how to stand beside yourself when those moments arrive.
And yes.
People can change.
I see it every day.
